Celebrate Oaxaca |
Guelaguetza is a traditional Oaxacan event celebrated in June,
featuring the song, dance, artwork, and food of various Oaxacan and Mexican cultures. Authentic food, mesmerizing folk dance,catchy music, and traditional arts and crafts all come together with a whole lot of cultural and community spirit to make Santa Maria's yearly Guelaguetza celebration.
Guelaguetza is presented by Nuestras Raices Milenarias and will feature live music, dancing, food, games, and other cultural activities June 15 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Santa richard mille replica Maria Fairpark, 937 S. Thornburg, Santa Maria. Cost is $3. Info: 264-2920 or 458-4247.

The Santa Maria Valley YMCA and local skate equipment and apparel store One Way Boardshop are holding a skate contest at the YMCA's much used and appreciated skate park. This is every young skater's chance to show off
skills and a love for skateboarding in a fun and friendly group atmosphere.

As cave paintings and tradition tell us, people have celebrated the summer solstice for ages--and why not? Summer is here, the weather is fine, and the plants will grow. The Dunes Center will be celebrating the solstice early on June 18 with a leisurely full-moon hike meeting at the Dunes Center.
